The Taiwan independence movement is a political movement which advocates Taiwan to de jure declare itself as an independent and sovereign state under either the Republic of China (ROC), which currently governs the Taiwan Area, or the hypothetical Republic of Taiwan, as opposed to Chinese unification in accordance with the One China policy or the status quo of co-existence in cross-strait relations.
