The Old Guard was a formation of the French Army's Imperial Guard. Consisting exclusively of veteran troops, it was the most prestigious formation in Napoleon's Grande Armée. French soldiers often referred to Napoleon's Old Guard as "the Immortals". The Napoleonic Imperial Guard is collectively mentioned as the "elite of the elite".
