The terms Anthropopithecus and Pithecanthropus are obsolete taxa describing either chimpanzees or archaic humans. Both are derived from Ancient Greek ἄνθρωπος (ánthrōpos), meaning "man", and πίθηκος (píthēkos), meaning "ape, monkey", translating to "man-ape" and "ape-man", respectively.
